Tantalum celebrates 200 years of discovery
March 01, 2002 The element, tantalum, was discovered
200 years ago this year by A.G. Ekeberg in Uppsala, Sweden. The element was named after
Tantalus, the mythological father of Niobe. Tantalus was a Greek mythology king who
revealed secrets to mortal man. His punishment for revealing these secrets included
standing in water up to his neck which constantly receded as he bent to drink and standing
below bundles of grapes which likewise receded if he reached for food.
